Climate-Smart Capacity-Building project launch
The pilot ‘Wheatbelt land-use paradigms – navigating new industries in the low carbon and natural capital era’ is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture program under the Natural Heritage Trust.
Led by Wheatbelt NRM’s expertise in managing change across industry though natural resource management initiatives, the project is backed by a strong research team including the University of Western Australia’s (UWA) Centre for Agricultural Economics and Development, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s (DPIRD) Climate Resilience Program, and the Farm Optimisation Group.
The project aims to help producers navigate new horizons through knowledge sharing and modelling the farm-scale economics of participating in potential carbon and natural capital projects that may also improve resilience in adjacent productive areas. The goal is to support sound farm business decisions by understanding how farming landscapes might perform economically, including their natural asset values, and to review how the agricultural sector is engaging with potential investment opportunities in this emerging sector.
Engaging with commercially driven native revegetation initiatives that diversify farm income is one mechanism to help build resilient farming systems in a drying climate.
The pilot represents an important body of work that brings together key partners to build knowledge, skills and trust through the publication and extension of an industry guide to navigating the environmental markets era.
