WNRM’s Noongar Boodjar Rangers undergo bushfire training
A team of seven Wheatbelt NRM Noongar Boodjar Rangers recently underwent Bushfire Safety Awareness training, a combination of online theory, classroom theory and practical scenarios with Northam Bush Fire Brigade captain Justin Fox.
The training was of a high standard, to well equip our Rangers when potentially facing a bushfire.
Covering communications, tools and equipment, procedures, PPC and PPE, map reading, firefighting strategies, and emergencies.
Scenarios for the Rangers included sending messages on the fire truck radio, acting out scenarios such as protecting property in a fire situation and being caught in a burn over.
It was stressful at times doing the scenarios and remembering procedures and how to protect yourself, and the Rangers found it hot and tiring just doing them.
We could only imagine what it would be like on a 40+ degree day with the heat of a bushfire added to the mix.
It made us all more appreciative and respectful of those who volunteer for services to the community such as bushfire fighting.
Overall, the training, whilst hard, was enjoyable and greatly appreciated by the Rangers. And they gained a sense of the importance of the service - to the point where most of the Rangers are now considering signing up to become a volunteer themselves.
