Great Turnout For Carbon Farming Workshop

Posted in:
Sustainable Agriculture

Held in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the workshop covered all aspects of the $15million State Government program and outlined how Wheatbelt landholders could get involved.

The workshop ran in two formats – both in person and online via Zoom. It was wonderful to see such a high level of interaction with many excellent questions from both the floor and online. It was a very engaging morning.

About the Carbon Farming & Land Restoration Program

Being categorised as a ‘low rainfall’ area, the Wheatbelt is a priority region for this program. According to the DPIRD website, “The State Government's $15 million Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program aims to realise agriculture's potential to sequester carbon in the landscape and contribute to the growth of the Western Australian carbon farming market. These on-ground projects will deliver environmental, social and economic co-benefits and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the farming industry.”

There are two grant levels available – ACCU Plus (A&B) and Future Carbon – which will make participation in the carbon economy more accessible for Wheatbelt farmers.

Support for Wheatbelt landholders

We are keen to see more carbon farming projects happen in the Wheatbelt and can provide support to anyone that is interested in applying for a grant. Expressions of interest are now open for the first round of grants with a second round to come in early 2022. More information on support can be found on our website.

We would encourage any Wheatbelt farmers who are seriously considering applying to Round 1 to contact us.  Wheatbelt NRM can assist with a range of planning, monitoring and evaluation plus on-ground works associated with these projects.  Please contact Felicity Gilbert fgilbert@wheatbeltnrm.org.au or 9670 3112.
