Wheatbelt NRM is urging stakeholders in the landcare, conservation and agricultural sectors in our region to have their say on the National Soil Strategy.

The second round of consultation on the Strategy opened this month, with stakeholders able to have their say until public submissions close on January 27.

You can make your voice heard by completing the online survey here.

A first of its kind policy, the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment has released a draft National Soil Strategy paper, which is available to read online.

The National Soil Strategy will set out how Australia will value, manage, and improve its soils over the next 20 years.

The draft strategy includes a set of 12 objectives across three overarching goals: To prioritise soil, to empower soil stewards and to secure soil science.

Wheatbelt NRM chief executive officer Karl O’Callaghan said the consultation period presents an opportunity for members of the Wheatbelt community to have their say on a Government initiative of both national and local significance.

“We urge landholders and members of the wider community to put their voices to this survey,” he said.

“The Wheatbelt deserves to be heard on such an important topic and to help define the place soil health takes on the national political agenda.”

Wheatbelt NRM participated in the first round of consultation on the National Soil Strategy, during which the DAWE engaged more than 500 stakeholders including scientists, government officials, industry groups and farmers during 2020.

It is anticipated the final National Soil Strategy will be released in May this year.
