Compost success could reduce synthetic fertiliser cost

Bencubbin farmer Rob Grylls is continuing to show he is a leader in the sustainable agriculture space in the Wheatbelt.

Rob is a previous Wheatbelt NRM Soil Health Champion and shared his decade long journey with attendees at the recent Talkin’ Soil Health Conference.

Rob is trialling compost as an alternative to synthetic fertilisers and Wheatbelt NRM is working with him to share the results through the Australian Government’s -National Landcare Program Smart Farms Small Grants.

This season Rob is conducting a plot trial using a new source of compost product as well as compost tea.

Last week Bonny and Claire were out on site taking initial soil samples.

These samples will be analysed for a range of parameters including nutrients, soil organic carbon and microbial activity. These will form a baseline measures and will be resampled as the trial progresses to see what the change is.

At a later date, we will be holding a field day with Rob to share the outcomes of this project. Join up as an Associate Member of Wheatbelt NRM to receive news of this, or contact Bonny at bdunlop@wheatbeltnrm.org.au or 0477 885 514.

This Wheatbelt NRM project is supported through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
