    NRM officers involved in rivercare across the State recently had the opportunity to hear the latest research from Land and Water Australia’s National Riparian Lands Program. The two-day workshop, held in the Avon Catchment, was funded through Land and Water Australia, Department of Environment, Avon Catchment Council and Natural Heritage Trust.

    The Avon Catchment Council aims to improve water quality in the Avon River and the condition of vegetation beside the river and its tributaries.

    Six Community Board Members have been elected to the Board of the Avon Catchment Council.

  • Tony McRae MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry; the Midwest and Wheatbelt, visited the Avon Catchment Council office in Northam on 27 July 2005.

    The Avon Catchment Council (ACC) has awarded 14 contracts to delivery organisations through a comprehensive Expression of Interest and Tendering process. The delivery organisations will undertake on ground delivery of the Council’s investment plan projects over the coming 12 months. These projects represent the first year of investment aimed at achieving 20 year targets in natural resource condition that are identified in the Avon NRM Strategy.

    Avon Catchment Council Indigenous NRM Facilitators Rod Garlett and Michelle Winmar, recently conducted a Noongar Cross Cultural Awareness Workshop. The workshop was held at the Seabrook Aboriginal Corporation in Brookton, and opened by local elders Janet Collard and Lester Bennell (in noongar), Arthur Slater (Avon Catchment Council) and Gary Clark (CEO – Brookton Shire).

    The Avon Catchment Council recently employed a state Malleefowl Network Facilitator to support the WA Malleefowl Network and encourage the delivery of malleefowl conservation initiatives.

    The Australian Government is offering up to $50 000 in Community Water Grants to provide support for community activities that promote wise water use. The Community Water Grant scheme targets projects involving on-ground activities that promote a culture of wise water use through water use efficiency, reuse or recycling and surface and groundwater health.

    The Avon Natural Resource Management (NRM) Strategy developed to manage land, water and biodiversity resources for the Avon River Basin has received Australian and State Government approval.

    Agriculture Minister Kim Chance today congratulated Cathy Lyons for winning the Department of Agriculture's Landcare Professional Award for 2005
