Sustainable Agriculture

The Regional NRM Strategy for the Avon River Basin identifies Soil Productivity as one of the big resource issues facing the region and Wheatbelt NRM has responded by making soil health the centre of our work in the agricultural sector.

Now this focus is featuring on the national agenda with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack stating we must act on soil health and confirming that the Australian Government has reappointed Major General Michael Jeffery to his important role as Australia's National Soil Advocate, so that we can continue to step up when it comes to soil management.

The Government will also provide $2 million over 4 years to support the invaluable work of Soils for Life.

Major General Jeffrey is well known to Wheatbelt farmers as he frequently visits this side of the continent and Wheatbelt NRM is excited to have an ongoing partnership with Soils for Life. We have a number of projects in development with Soils for Life and we are excited to be able to bring these opportunities to the Wheatbelt.
