Juncus control in Toodyay

Bruce McGowan from Toodyay has been working hard recently to get rid of invasive Spiny Rush (Juncus acutis) from a low lying area of his property.

Weed control on the one hectare site began with a control burn which removed a large proportion of vegetative material, and the remaining Spiny Rush was removed mechanically. Any resultant regrowth will be dealt with via chemical control using a 2% mix of Glyphosate and penetrant.

The site will be planted out this July with over 3000 seedlings made up of a biodiverse mix of local species. These seedlings will help prevent reestablishment of the Spiny Rush and provide habitat for wildlife.

Bruce’s work is a perfect example of weed management as part of site preparation for revegetation.

This project forms part of Wheatbelt NRMs 2016 Bushcare Grants which are supported by funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.
