Celebrating World Wildlife Day!

The 3rd of March is the United Nation's World Wildlife Day.

It’s an international day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.

As part of this year’s theme – ‘Listen to the young voices’ – we’d like to introduce you to Harrison and Hudson Hammond from Mt Stirling in the Wheatbelt, just north of Kellerberrin.

Harrison and Hudson have been taking part in our community feral control program by using cage traps to capture feral cats that are threatening endangered Black-flanked Rock-wallabies.

They are pictured here with Gregory Andrews the Threatened Species Commissioner, who was so impressed with their work that he flew from Canberra to their home farm.

The awards he presented them with are for being ‘Heroes in the Fight Against Extinction’.

“Each night a feral cat can consume a minimum three to four native animals, which means each year they’re responsible for the destruction of more than a thousand,” Gregory Andrews said.

“These boys have trapped at least three* cats, which means they have helped protect more than 3000 native insects and animals in their own backyard.”

Young people are our future leaders and decision makers of the world. Let’s actively encourage them to act locally and globally to protect endangered wildlife!
