Natural resource management group Wheatbelt NRM has taken out top honours at this year’s WA Regional Achievement and Community Awards. The awards encourage, acknowledge and reward valuable contributions and outstanding achievements in regional and rural areas. Wheatbelt NRM’s chairperson Glenice Batchelor said the achievement was acknowledgement for everyone at Wheatbelt NRM Inc, the community, member groups and partner organisations. “This achievement recognises the commitment and effort of everyone involved over the years in our region, the traditional home of the Noongar people,” Glenice Batchelor said. “We will continue to work together to achieve great outcomes for everyone and our unique landscape.” Along with its project partners, Wheatbelt NRM has been working to protect the threatened Avon region ecosystem, covering nearly 12 million hectares. Over the past five years the group has worked closely with communities to re-vegetate using native trees, salinity management and encourage the protection of biodiversity. Wheatbelt NRM’s project partners include WWF, Department of Water, Department of Conservation and Greening Australia. The awards were held at the Perth Convention Centre on Friday night, where Wheatbelt NRM was announced as the winner of the Landcorp Sustainability Category. The group went on to win the Regional Achievement and Community Award, selected across all ten categories. Wheatbelt NRM and its partner organisations will be continuing its award winning work with the Avon River Basin community through the Healthy Bushlands program, funded by the Australian Governments Caring for our Country program.
