Avon Residents Encouraged to have their say on the Swan Canning River System

The Avon Catchment Council (ACC) is encouraging residents of the Avon River to comment on the recently released Swan Canning Water Quality Improvement Plan.

The Swan Canning river system was identified as a “hotspot” for water quality issues as part of the Coastal Catchments Initiative, who provided The Swan River Trust with funding to prepare the Water Quality Improvement Plan for the Swan Canning river system.

This Plan will provide a roadmap for reducing nutrient levels in the river system. The Avon River, which is outside the scope of the Plan, contributes a significant proportion of this nutrient load.

The ACC believes it is essential that the Avon be considered, and that the views of those connected with the Avon River system are heard.

ACC Operations Manager said the Council is encouraging Avon residents to express their views on the draft Plan, which will help guide investment aimed at reducing nutrient levels in the Swan and Canning rivers.

“For this improvement plan to reach its goal it is imperative that Avon residents comment on behalf of the River system as a whole” she said.

Copies of the plan are available from the Swan River Trust. Comments need to be submitted by 17 April 2009
