The latest publication from the Aboriginal NRM team was recently launched at a weekend celebration at Pumphrey’s Bridge.

‘Koompkinning: The Pumphreys Bridge Storybook’ is a collation of local stories and photographs, containing information on local significant sites, flora and fauna, family groups, and the mysterious falling phenominum stones.

A specially commissioned memorial plaque for the site was also unveiled recognising the Noongar families who lived and worked in Pumphrey’s Bridge and who still have ties with the area.

“Noongars worked around here, shearing and all that on farms, clearing, fencing, all farm work and that. Yeah, they was the ones got the farmers going. They cleared all that land around that area.” – Mervyn Abraham, extract from 'Koompkinning: The Pumphrey’s Bridge Storybook’.

The celebrations included a ‘Welcome to Country’ by local Noongar Elders Mervyn Abraham and Gary Bennell, plaque unveiling by Nick Abraham, followed by cultural dancing fused with hip hop, and live music into the night.

It was a great event and everyone who attended expressed interest in the event becoming an annual celebration of local Aboriginal culture in the region.
