Creating Connections

The Creating Connections Project ran between October 2011 and June 2013 in the South Eastern Wheatbelt. This project aimed to increase the capacity of farmers to make informed decisions about strategic revegetation on farms in the Avon Wheatbelt IBRA region.

The project's outcomes were achieved by working in partnership other organisations that work in the field of revegetation to deliver an extension program demonstrating how to make informed decisions about what to plant where and why to suit individual farmer’s needs. Land holders were supported by the development of Agroforestry Management plans to assist in the implementation of agroforestry on farm.

The project developed an interactive smart phone application, the “Seedling Selector”, which is available on Android and iPhone platforms.

This App assists the user to select the right species for the task, whether that is forage, timber, carbon sequestration or other agroforestry products like brushwood and sandalwood. Workshops and training opportunities were also held for the community to engage them in the biodiversity conservation aspect of strategic agroforestry plantings.

Agroforestry management plans were also developed to support farmers' ability to conduct revegetation and conservation activities on their farms. The plans and resources provided opportunities for farmers to include revegetation on-farm that will not only provide productivity improvements, but will consider the need to connect biodiversity assets, provide for stepping stones and provide habitat for priority species.
